The 12 Days of Anticipation..On the Eighth Day

December 8th, 2011 at 5:57 pm by under Entertainment, General Talk, The Rhode Show

Thanks for all of the well wishes yesterday. Co-hosting for the day was a dream come true!

Today I had my final interview at the station. I left feeling wonderful, with the knowledge that I’ve said everything I wanted to say, been 100% me, and have no regrets.  The amount of love and support friends, family, and once.strangers.now.friends have shared with me is unquantifiable.  I am truly blessed.

Tonight I get to spend some time spreading some holiday cheer with some loved ones.

I hope you all had a lovely Thursday!  It’s almost TGIF :)

Please make sure you take some time today to send some love and thoughts to those at Virginia Tech.  It’s times like these that truly show us how precious life is.

Shine On,

Mary

The 12 Days of Anticipation..On the Seventh Day

Hi Rhode Show World!

I had a fantastic day speaking on the radio, hosting the show and then skating with Mickey as well as Minnie. I’ll update you more tomorrow as I’ve had an extraordinarily busy day and I am completely exhausted.

But before I leave you for the evening, I want to make sure we recognize this day for the great historical significance it holds in our nations history.

As we are all aware, today is the seventieth anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Many of our parents, grand parents, and great grand parents for some, joined and served in our nations military as a result of the “date which will live in infamy.”

Aptly titled, “The Greatest Generation” by Tom Brokaw, those American men and women answered the call to arms, stood in defiance of tyranny, and carried out freedom’s triumph over anyone who challenged its existence. Our debt to them can never be repaid. We can, however, do our best to honor them with our undying respect, and ensure their stories are never forgotten.

See you tomorrow. And, as always…

Shine On

Skating with Disney!

December 7th, 2011 at 1:15 pm by under Entertainment, General Talk, The Rhode Show

Today the Top 5 girls got together for a magical time with Mickey and Minnie at Lynch Arena. We were lucky enough to have a sneak peek of what’s to come in Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey coming to The Dunkin Donuts Center, and as if that wasn’t enough we were given a skating lesson too!! Although stopping is not my strong suit, and skating backwards wasn’t happening, I was somehow able to pull off a few fun spins without wiping out! I’m glad all of us girls got to experience this together, it not only made it more fun, but they also made it much safer for everyone since they doubled as a way to help me stop crashing into the walls (or ice)!

The Disney on Ice girls showed us a few of their ridiculously impressive skating tricks, and then took the time to try to teach us a few of our own tricks including spinning, skating on one leg, and a few fun partner tricks! We were even given our own mouse ears!! Although our adventures are almost over we still have our Toys for Tots event at Cardi’s on Monday before the big announcement is made! So don’t go anywhere just yet, there is still more fun coming your way, and I will keep you posted as we go! Now I’m off to prepare for my exciting day of co-hosting tomorrow!!

Mice Skating!!

December 7th, 2011 at 12:04 pm by under General Talk, The Rhode Show

What a fun day!  I’m taking a little break from my holiday posts to talk about our top 5 adventures!!

Today we got to skate with Mickey and Minnie mouse!  The lovely pair are in town for their new show Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey, and they decided to stop by and show us a few moves!

Between skating backwards, spinning, and gliding on one foot – I feel like I had quite the lesson!  Minnie is cute as a button, she had me smiling from ear to ear, and Mickey is quite the charmer ;)

There were also some huge fans of the mice who took a break from hockey practice to say hello!  They were priceless, let me tell you!

I certainly had a great morning, I’m sure the other ladies would agree!  We were even graceful – not a single one of us fell down!

I hope you’ll all be able to see Mickey and Minnie in action when they’re here for their show:  December 28-January 1

I promise it will be well worth it!!

Till next time

<3 Sarah

The Excitement Continues…

December 6th, 2011 at 7:27 pm by under Entertainment, General Talk, The Rhode Show

This week has been so great and it’s only Tuesday! Each day this week the Top 5 gals will be co-hosting The Rhode Show and my turn is Friday! Last but definitely not least ;) Before my big debut on Friday morning I will be a busy bee. On Wednesday we have been invited to ice skate with America’s favorite couple Mickey and Minnie Mouse! They are in town for their Disney on Ice: Mickey & Minnie’s Magical Journey, which will be at the Dunkin Donuts Center Dec 28th-Jan1st! Every year as a kid I would go watch all of the Disney shows on ice, and some things never change. I will be watching another magical show yet again this year :)

My next stop will be bright and early Friday morning at 5:45am at Cat Country 98.1 on The Morning Show with Jess, Brian, and Amanda. I am a HUGE Country music fan, so as soon as I heard that I was going to be interviewed I was smiling from ear to ear. Cat Country 98.1 is programmed as my #1 radio station (just a bit OBSESSED) what can I say I LOVE IT!

Country Fest!

Right after my interview it’s off to the studio to Co-host The Rhode Show. This is what I have been waiting to do since I found out I was one of the Top 5 finalists. I am beyond excited and anxious to sit alongside Danielle and Patrick on the big white couch!

Make sure to tune in on Friday morning at 8am!

A Few Favorites

December 6th, 2011 at 12:31 pm by under General Talk, The Rhode Show

Getting ready for my stocking a few years ago!

I hope everyone got to watch Tera host this morning!  Congrats to her – I hope she had a blast!

As for me, I’ve been working on my self-assigned task, and here are a few favorite Christmas movies I came up with!

When I asked people their favorite holiday movie, “Elf” came up again and again!  It’s really become a family classic for the next generation!  I know my friends can’t get enough – what about you?

Forget “new classic”  The Grinch is just a classic!  My sister and I used to reenact Sam and the Grinch sledding down the hill to steal Christmas from the whos – and my dad’s favorite christmas song is Dahoo Dores – who doesn’t remember loving this one growing up?

Another newer favorite – and one of my personal favorites - is “Love, Actually”.  We were talking about this movie before I hosted yesterday morning, and it seemed to be a favorite around the station too!  It’s sweet, a little sappy, and full of real characters.  What’s not to love?

“The year without a Santa Clause” was a huge favorite for tons of people growing up, myself included!  Personal favorites of mine?  Snow Meiser and Heat Miser, of course!

Finally, another newer favorite, “A Christmas Story”  – I’ve always found this movie to be a little dark – but tons of people seem to agree – watching it 24 hours a day gets them in the holiday spirit!

Those were the top 5 I got together from suggestions given to me – personally a few of my favorites weren’t on the list.  I don’t think anything compares to one of the most classic movies “It’s a Wonderful Life”, and as for newer ones, I’m pretty partial to “Home Alone” – I also have a soft-spot for Charlie Brown’s tiny Christmas tree.

What do you guys think?  Tomorrow, favorite Christmas traditions!

Till then
<3 Sarah

The 12 Days of Anticipation..On the Fifth Day

December 6th, 2011 at 10:54 am by under Entertainment, General Talk, The Rhode Show

dressed up for the holidays last year with my friend Sarah, my husband, and my friend Dawn

Last night I attended one of my favorite annual events, Brown University’s Annual Latin Carol Celebration.

the cover of the book they handed out to all who participated in the celebration

The building was packed full of people young and old, all of whom enjoyed the carols, readings, and the very talented organist.  One of the readers was Brown’s President,  Ruth Simmons.  The halls were decked, and everyone was dressed in festive outfits.

an example of the music - check out the latin!

Even if though I’m not particularly well versed in Latin, I gave the songs my best shot.  Luckily, they were all tunes that I was quite familiar with!

I hope you had a great start to your week as well :)

Shine On,

Mary

The Fun Doesn’t Stop

December 5th, 2011 at 11:17 am by under General Talk, The Rhode Show

All the ladies with a very happy Slick Nick!

What a day!  I can’t believe my time on the couch for the contest has come and gone, but I’ll tell you, it was AMAZING!  I feel like I’m in a dream – that was literally the greatest hour of my life (also probably the fastest hour of my life).  Everything I’ve gotten to do over the last month has been magical and I wouldn’t trade this chance for anything!  I hope you all thought I was the hostess with the mostess – I know I had an absolute blast!  I can’t wait to cheer on my fellow 5, I wish them all the best of luck!

Here I am at Cat Country 98.1 - bright and early!!

As promised, I’m back to the blogging board :)

I figured, even though my official SFAS assignments are done for now, that doesn’t mean I can’t challenge myself to get a scoop!  Over the last month or so you viewers have been getting to know us, but I want to get to know you guys better – so, for the next few days, I’m going to poll the faithful Rhode Show followers, as well as some of my own friends, to find out some of your favorite things.

Since it ’tis the season – I wanted to go with a holiday theme, and I decided to start with some favorite things to do around here to get you into the holiday spirit! I hope you all saw Michaela’s piece on The Santa Run, happening this Saturday morning in New Bedford!  I asked people what some of their other favorites are, and here’s what they had to say!

A huge favorite for Rhode Islanders is Trinity Rep’s “A Christmas Carol”.  I know growing up in Rhode Island I used to go on a school field trip to see the show every year!  Personally I think it gets better and better, and it seems you guys agree!

Another ‘fan favorite’ performance is Festival Ballet’s “The Nutcracker”, which is going on this weekend at PPAC!  I have to admit, I am biased when it comes to this performance, as I danced with Festival Ballet for many years growing up!  They are such a great company, and the show is beautiful and fun for everyone year after year!

Something else people told me they love to do this time of year is an event the Top 5 get to partake in on Wednesday morning – Ice Skating!  Even if you’re a klutz, it’s tons of fun to slip and slide around the ice!  It’s a great date, a great family outing, and a great way to get some exercise!  One of the perks of going at Kennedy Plaza is, of course, the lovely view of downtown providence!

Lots of people suggested the Roger Williams Park Zoo to me!  Sadly, Santa already made his trips to the zoo this year (I really hope some of you got a chance to see him last weekend!) but it doesn’t mean the zoo isn’t a great place to visit this time of year!  There are candy-canes and wintery wonderlands set up all over the park – and, here’s a sneaky little secret, the animals are a lot more social when the weather is a little cooler, even they can’t deny the Christmas spirit!

One more bit of holiday fun around the corner – this one I didn’t even know about until people started telling me – is typically a summer favorite.  The city announced that on December 16th they’re doing a partial waterfire!  I don’t know if we’ll have any snow  – but I’m sure the river will look beautiful lit up on a Wintery night – I can’t think of a better reason to go out and enjoy the  atmosphere!  Providence has always reminded me of a Charles Dickens novel in the winter!

Those are just a few  ideas I got from you guys!  Now I want to hear even more!  What are your favorite things to do in RI during the holiday season!  And tomorrow, I want to write about favorite movies you watch this time of year, so fill me in on those as well!  Leave me some comments and messages, because this inquiring mind wants to know!!!!!
