Top 8 Girls…zzzzzz
Outside of a couple of very good performances, there was no real “moment” for me last night. Yes, Crystal Bowersox was very good. Other than that, the whole night was mediocre, at best. In school, they would have gotten a ‘C’.
Looking back at last week, my heart was broken when Michelle Delamore was sent home. She was given enough air-time Idol Producers earlier on in the season. And Haeley…well, she deserved to be watching from home. Sorry. She’s not ready for the competition.

The Good

AMERICAN IDOL: TOP 16: Lacey Brown performs in front of the judges on AMERICAN DOL airing Tuesday, March 9 on FOX. CR: Frank Micelotta/ FOX.
Lacey Brown who sang “The Story” by Brandy Carlisle, was fantastic. I swear, I said this to my wife before the judges did: “It was her best performance yet, but it was a boring”. That’s exactly what the judges said. It was a perfect, steady performance. She had superb control over her quirky little voice. These are the kind of songs she needs to be singing. Six Pence None The Richer is within her range, too, but she needs to sing it much better than last week. I would like to hear Lacey sing a Cranberries song. Back to last night…little did I know while I was watching her that Lacy would be one of the top 4 of the night. She should be back next week.
Katelyn Epperly tried to make the Earth move under our feet with her Carole King song. It didn’t move the Earth. It was what it was. She seemed a little awkward standing there on stage with her keyboard. It was technically okay, but I don’t think her voice could quite carry that song. She seemed very disconnected from the song….like she was singing just to sing a song. Katelyn needs to compete. She will probably be back next week.
Crystal Bowersox made Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason” more Rock ‘n Roll. I always thought the song could use a little more attitude. She added that and more. With her electrical guitar in hand, she was brilliant. It didn’t blow me out of the water, but these are the kind of songs she needs to sing. She will be back next week.
The Not-So-Good
Katie Stevens. The Connecticut native could be in BIG trouble this week. They are kicking off two contestants this week. Her rendition of Kelly Clarkson’s ”Breakaway” wasn’t good at all. It seriously pains me to say, it was awful. There were flat notes everywhere and there were pitch notes throughout the song. It was definitely her worst performance. Simon thought it was good, but the judges hear things differently from us at home. When he goes back to listen to it, he’ll regret he said it was good. This definitely could be the last week for Katie. What could save her is her body of work. She belongs in the Top 12.
Lilly Scott sang Patsy Cline’s “I Fall to Pieces”. I’m tired of Lilly already. She made a weird face and hit a weird note right in the beginning. Her voice was seriously grating on my nerves. I wish she would play something more current. Kara said Lilly made Patsy Cline more contemporary. I strongly disagree. She definitely did not have that ‘Wow’ factor. She’s probably safe this week.
Paige Miles is in very big danger of going home. Seriously…a Charlie Chaplin song? What? She sang “Smile”. Maybe she should have smiled. I may have enjoyed it more. It was a very bad song choice for obvious reasons. With that said, it was an awful, awful performance. There were some pretty horrific notes throughout the song. She has a pretty big following and she may survive this week, but she should go home.
So…I’m thinking that Paige and Katie Stevens will be going home. I hope Katie sticks around. I really do. The boys will perform tonight beginning at 9pm and you can watch the Results show on Thursday night on Fox Providence.
